River water DOES flow into the ocean. Although some rivers flow into lakes, all those lakes have rivers flowing out of them that eventually end up in the ocean (except for a few inland bodies of salt water such as the Dead Sea and the Great Salt Lake).

Well, this is what happens with most rivers. The runoff ends up in the ocean, carrying whatever material is deposited (rubbish, pesticide residues, fertiliser residue, sewerage etc.) into it, or whatever materials are eroded by it (rocks, sand, silt).

Only a few rivers do not terminate in the ocean, in these instances they normally form shallow lakes or seas.

The water from the ocean will go back to the river, flow to the lake and end up to the ocean.
