Benjamin Franklin did not invent electricity however he did discover many things about it. He discovered electricity in 1752. He is most famous for discovering the lightning rod which advanced his discovery.

In Philadelphia on June 15, 1752 at age 46, Benjamin Franklin executed (with help from his son, William) his famed kite experiment. However, what he did was not to invent electricity, but rather prove lightning to be electricity, which may be transferred (conduction). He used this knowledge to invent the lighting rod, which saved many lives. Electricity itself, however, is not something to be invented, but rather something that is there and may be harnessed (as in the case of powering homes today).
