Squanto was heart broken to return to his home and find all the people that he used to know had died. When the Englishmen arrived, he was glad that people were living on the land of his people again. He asked if he could live with them because it helped him feel better to be with people again in the village where he used to live. The colonists needed help, and he couldn't help but help them.
In addition, he gained considerable prestige among the local tribe as the only one who could communicate with the Englishmen.
