Originally published as the cover for the July 6, 1916, issue of Leslie's Weekly with the title "What Are You Doing for Preparedness?" this portrait of "Uncle Sam" went on to become--according to its creator, James Montgomery Flagg--"the most famous poster in the world." Over four million copies were printed between 1917 and 1918, as the United States entered World War I and began sending troops and matériel into war zones.
Uncle Sam was first referred to in the 1775 version of the song "Yankee Doodle." Uncle Sam was first illustrated in 1816 by Frederick Augustus Fidfaddy, Esp..'s allegorical book, "The Adventures of Uncle Sam in Search After His Lost Honor."

Uncle Sam originated 200 years ago, in 1813. The character, which has become a symbol of America, is based off of a meat packer named Sam Wilson. The name originates from the initials that were stamped on meat cans during the War of 1812. Wilson's company would stamp "U.S." on the meat cans, which led to soldiers coining the term Uncle Sam.
Uncle Sam (initials U.S.) is a common national personification of the American government that, according to legend, came into use during the War of 1812 and was supposedly named for Samuel Wilson.
