The Ford 5.0 liter V8 is a continuation of the original 302 c.i. V8 introduced in 1968. Both are based on the Windsor family of engines introduced in the early 1960's - improved and refined over the years to increase power, save weight, and meet emissions standards. The first appearance of the 5.0 liter identification was on the 1978 Mustang II King Cobra. Since the Mustang II was marketed as a car with a European flair, Ford had used the metric identification in lieu of cubic inches on the 4 and 6 cylinder engines since 1974, later extending it to the V8. The European influence was emphasized more in the marketing of the redesigned 'fox' body Mustang of 1979, so all available engines were now known by their metric displacement. The 5.0 Mustang came into it's own in 1982 with a renewed emphasis on performance and the reintroduction of the Mustang GT. The 1982 5.0 Mustang was equipped with a 2 barrel carburetor. Later versions brought back the 4 barrel carburetor, and introduced roller-tappet camshafts, electronic fuel injection, factory-installed headers and double-roller timing chains. The 5.0 Mustang continued with the 1994 redesign on the SN95 chassis. The last year for the 5.0 Mustang was 1995. It was replaced by the 4.6 liter 'modular' engine for 1996.
