The artifacts from the Norse settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows, in Newfoundland, have been dated to approximately 1000 years ago. That agrees with the Icelandic sagas that mention the land west of Greenland, bearing in mind that the sagas were transmitted orally and not written down until some 250 years after the events they describe.
