While most woolly mammoths died out at the end of the Pleistocene (12,000 years ago), a small population survived on St. Paul Island, Alaska, up until 6000 BC [2], while another remained on Wrangel Island, located in the Arctic Ocean, up until 1700 BC. Possibly due to their limited food supply, these animals were a dwarf variety, thus much smaller than the original Pleistocene woolly mammoth. However, the Wrangel Island mammoths should not be confused with the Channel Islands Pygmy Mammoth, Mammuthus exilis, which was a different species.

Exact year unknown--around 4,500 years ago. Actually we do have a date. Our heroes, Gronk and Ogg, inadvertently caused the demise of the northern Woolly Mammoth. It was a direct consequence of the eruption of Mt. Blarg that led to the sad turn of events that changed the world as we know it. When Gronk decided that Mammoth tartar wasn't exactly a breakfast dish to go with the now famous y'egg, his next course of action was to cast about for a way to make the mammoth more palatable. Efforts to cook the y'egg and mammoth together was a culinary disaster. The y'eggs were incinerated while the mammoth was still raw...a most undesirable turn of events. Gronk discussed this evil turn of events with Ogg in an effort to collaborate a more desirable meal. Ogg had been experimenting with the strange rock that the two of them had inadvertently made, the brick. He had discovered that mud would cement two or more bricks together, but had not found a useful purpose for this discovery. When Gronk came with his problem, Ogg had a light bulb moment. Reasoning that Mt. Blarg had spewed fire out of its cone when Blarg had pitched into it, Ogg thought that perhaps a miniature Mt. Blarg made of bricks could cook the mammoth in less time. After all, he had all these bricks lying around, and Blarg had been a very large man, similar in size and shape to the mammoth. If Blarg had been cooked by Mt. Blarg accidentally,(at least that was what they thought because Blarg had never returned) what was to say that mammoth could be cooked to the desired doneness by similar methods? Explaining his idea to the frustrated chef Gronk, together they set about making a smaller sized cone-shaped brick structure. The first one was very much too small for their purposes, but it had an unexpected bonus as most discoveries do. The small brick structure proved wonderful for making fires last longer and burn hotter without the danger of singed clothing. As most clothing at the time was uncured hides, this structure had distinct advantages over an open fire. The small structure could be approached without danger to clothing or skin which was a distinct advantage. The new structure could heat the other strange rocks called yron to very high temperatures, thus making the y'eggs cook faster. Gronk was so excited that he inadvertently tossed some grain on to the yron rock and it immediately started to cook. Sheila, Gronk's mate, snatched the yron off the top of the structure and put water on the grains. To their amazement, the resulting paste was palatable and quickly became a happy alternative to a meat and y'egg diet. But the problem of the mammoth being raw was still one to be solved. The two inventors made a fairly large structure based on the successful smaller version. The new and improved (isn't there always something new and improved?) version should have been large enough to cook the mammoth whole. But as with all new things, there were unforeseen problems. With this model, the fire wasn't big enough to handle a whole mammoth and the structure couldn't be tended from the outside as the smaller one was. But...it was rain proof and was certainly tall enough for the tribe to learn to stand upright. After some thought, they knocked a hole in the side and moved into it themselves. It seemed a vast improvement on the shallow caves they had originally been living in. So a compromise was reached. The two entrepreneurs diligently constructed a medium sized structure and designed a medium sized hole in the middle in the ground for a fire. There was a ladder to watch from the top, and an opening to cart the mammoth into it. Successful experimentation had led to the world's first barbecue pit and what a success it was! In fact it was so successful that the demand for mammoth barbecued meat grew to...well... mammoth proportions! A whole infant industry of sauces, accessories, and techniques grew up around this new structure. In fact this became so important to the local economy that Gronk and Ogg organized parties to herd the mammoths into areas designed for easy slaughter of the animals. This was the beginning of animal husbandry, as you may have noticed, and it looked like the beginning of a long and happy enterprise. But sadly, the mammoths did not reproduce quickly enough to replenish the herds. It never occurred to the two inventors that there would ever be a time when the mammoth would not be there. They exported their new technology to the other tribes and overkill became the word of the day. When they finally realized that the mammoths were not having little mammoths quickly enough, it was too late. So to commemorate the sad occasion, they held their last mammoth barbecue on the 12th of Ermph in the year 19 of the anniversary of Mt. Blarg's eruption. A wonderful time was had by all. Of course by this time Gronk had figured out that while monkey wasn't good to barbecue, ox was.

The Southern Woolly Mammoth is a whole other story. These were around much longer. Until 1982 to be exact, although the only remaining herd was in Greenland, still enjoying the last vestiges of the ice age. (Yes, the Southern Woolly Mammoth migrated North well after it was named. I know it is confusing.) They enjoyed peace and tranquility on a secret American base in the middle of the continent until funding was cut in 1982 for the project, the purpose of which had been lost years before in a censoring accident. In order to cover up their previous mistake, the remaining Mammoths were butchered, cut into tiny pieces, and marketed as chicken wings in various establishments around the world. No one noticed the difference.

Woolly mammoths first evolved about 150,000 years ago. All of the full sized woolly mammoths became extinct 10,000 years ago. However, a dwarf variety of woolly mammoth existed on Wrangel Island until 3,700 years ago.

Woolly mammoths may have evolved as early as 150,000 years ago. They died out about 8,000 years ago, except for small populations of dwarf mammoths that lived on a couple of islands. The last mammoths to die out lived on Wrangel Island (in what is now Russia) until 1,700 BC.
