Spain began as an independent country in 1492 when all the Christian Kingdoms finally defeated the Moors.

The 3 largest kingdoms were co-ruled by Isabel I, Queen of the Kingdoms of Castile and Leon, and Ferdinand II, King of Aragon. Gradually they exerted their influence over the rest of the smaller kingdoms and Spain slowly emerged.

Spain began as a country with the marriage of Isabel I of Castile and Leon to Ferdinand II of Aragon in 1469. When that couple finally finished the 700 year effort to expel the Moors in 1492 the foundation of modern Spain was laid down.

It was founded as a Roman city.

I've found different dates for when they actually founded it but according to wikipedia, the Romans turned whatever was there into a castrum (which is a roman military camp) in 15BC. Sorry if that hasn't helped.

Spain was united from the two previous kingdoms of Castille and Aragon in 1492. The name Kingdom of Spain was first used in this year.

Previously, the region was called Hispania or Iberia. (Hispania is where the name Spain comes from.)
