No one knows for sure; notionally he was born in 1 BC, but if he was contemporary with Herod the Great, he must have been born in (or before) 4 BC - when Herod died. One of the gospels mentions the Roman census, however that took place several years after Herod died. It seems likely that the census was a device used by the gospel writer to place Jesus in Bethlehem (this would fulfil a prophecy) however, given that the census was after Herod's death and it is pretty unlikely that people would be made to go to the town of a distant ancestor, many scholars disregard the census for dating Jesus.
The year of Jesus' death is even vaguer; it's the main reason that Easter is a movable feast, but traditionally, he is thought to have died at the age of 33, so around 33AD.
There is another twist in the tail, however, there's some circumstantial evidence that Jesus spent his youth in Kashmir. If that was the case, then he returned to Kashmir and died there around 100AD.
Additional Comments:
There is a growing number of biblical students and scholars that would say that Jesus was born at the end of 5BC and the start of 4 BC on the Jewish calendar.
Although the consensus of many is that Jesus died somewhere between 29 and 36 AD, with Sir Isaac newton choosing 34 AD, there is growing consensus for 33 AD. However, there are those who calculate the 4 Passovers along with the biblical narrative and select 31 AD as the only viable year for the Crucifixion. These would point out too that Jesus would have been 36 and 1/2 years old - relating His return after the 3 and 1/2 year tribulation and Day of the Lord - associating Him then to 40 years which some consider a biblical number of completion.
Circa. 33 1/2 years about if you you are asking from his birth to crucifixion.
If you are asking 'how long ago'. look at the date used in the western world.
2011 is how many years since the birth of Christ. It is known as AD (Anno Domini) The year of our Lord.
Those that deny Christ or the date of his birth, use the same number but refer to it as the Common Era. (C.E.)
If Jesus died in 32AD according to Sir Robert Anderson that would make it 1979 years ago. But it isn't because the year is taken from his BIRTH not his Crucifixion.
He lived 33 years on earth and walked on it, but 40 days after the resurrection.
Jesus was crucified at 33 years old.
