The old RSC (rolled steel channel) had a parallel back and the flanges were tapered approx. 5 degrees becoming thinner toward their ends (toes).

The later PFC (parallel flanged channel)-type has a parallell back and the two flanges are now also parallel i.e. their thickness stays the same from the back to the toe.
