Depending on the zoo, how large it is, species of the animals and how naturally social they are, usually most often animals of the same species are the ones most likely to live together. However, if an animal is naturally solitary, it is penned and held by itself. Rarely would you get animals that are not naturally found to coexist in the wild living together.

An example is the trio of the black bear, lioness and tiger that have been living together in peaceful harmony for over 10 years--ever since they were cubs--when they were rescued from drug dealers that had abused and neglected them and taken to Noah's Ark, an animal rescue center in Georgia. It's unusual because both the bear and the tiger are solitary creatures, and yet they can, have and continue to live together, play together and eat together in peaceful coexistence.
