Whats wrong with the Liberty windshield It chips so easy 3 days old and its been pelted?

My 2002 Liberty Limited was hit by a rock and cracked. Had the insurance replace the winsheild. Autoglass company tried replacing with a "thinner" winsheild, but always re-cracked in the drivers lower corner. After three attempts, I was told by the mechanic he was going to use the "thicker" winshield. Never had a problem since. Been three years since repair and have been hit by some pretty big rocks on the HWY.
