I asked a friend of mine who is a Broadway expert. He suggested Michael Gruber. He was in the original run of the show on broadway, but not the original cast, and then he was in the revivial.
It was originally on Broadway from May 24th, 1966 to January 3rd, 1970. It ran from 1508 performances. There was another Boroadway revival in July 24th, 1983, but only ran 41 performances due to poor sales.
The original Broadway production ran Sep. 16, 1925 to Jun. 19, 1926 for a total of 321 performances (http://ibdb.com/production.asp?ID=9900), but the more popular revival ran Jan. 19, 1971 to Feb. 3 1973 for 861 performances (http://ibdb.com/production.asp?ID=3580).
Both the original production of Dreamgirls on Broadway, and the 1987 revival, were directed by Michael Bennett.
