Mass inertia and weight. When you compress a sponge, you are reducing the amount of space it takes up, which means you are decreasing its volume. Mass inertia and weight are based on how much matter the sponge is made of. That cannot be changed just by compressing the sponge. It will still have the same amount of matter.
