When a heater core goes bad does it have to leak onto the floor?

No, it's not normal. You have a leak in the heater core or may just be connections to heater core. If left untreated, it will soak into your rug and eventually cause your floor to rot.

not any oil in your heater core although the heater core uses coolant coming from and returning to the engine so when damaged or being worked on coolant can leak under the dash and into the floor

Heater core is shot, its monted on the firewall behind center console/instrument cluster. When turning on heater fan, will dischrge coolant out of the vent. Replace heater core to resolve the leak

Probably, although it might be a heater hose. You will have to access the core in either case. If it smells like anti freeze then you may have a leak. If it is water then check your windshield seal. I have seen water leak down through the window post to the floor.

The heater core or a hose to the heater core has a leak. Hopefully it's a hose under the hood because it's a very involved process to get the heater core out.
