When a light switched is turned on the circuit is usually closed.
To de-energize a circuit, the voltage has to be cut off at the source. This is usually done with a disconnect switch which is located just before the circuit's load. Turning off the breaker on a distribution panel will de-energize the circuit it is feeding. To make sure that the voltage can not be turned back on when work is being done on the circuit, the switch or breaker must have a lock off device to prevent the circuit from being turned on, except by the person that locked the circuit off.
It can be done but it requires knowledge about how a 3way is wired to convert it to a regular switch. It would involve testing live wires to determine where power starts at. You can't just replace one switch.
Shut off the power to the light circuit. Remove the old light switch if there is one. Remove the old lamp holder base. Make a diagram and note how the wires were attached, what colour screws to what colour wire. At the light switch wire nut the two wires that came off of the switch together. The switch plate cover will have to be replaced with a blank cover plate to cover the old switch box. Install the new pull chain lamp holder using the notes and diagram that you made. Some of the lamp holders that have a switch in them will not have terminal screws. The wire to the switch will be the "hot" wire. The other wire from the old lamp holder will be the neutral which should be a white wire. Insert the bulb and turn the power back on. Now the pull chain will control the light rather that the wall switch.
In the wall switch box you should have a white and black pair from your source of power (120 volts). The other pair of black and white wires from the wall box should be going to the light fixture junction box. With the power off, connect the two white wires together with a wire nut. Connect the two bare copper ground wires together making sure that at least one of the ground wires goes under the green screw in the switch junction box. Turn the switch to the off position, no little indicator bump showing on the switch toggle lever. Now take the black incoming hot wire and put it under the top screw on the switch. Hot wires always go to the top of switches. Now put the black wire that is going to the light fixture under the bottom screw. Tighten both. Install the switch into the wall box with the switch handle in the down position. All switches when installed must be off in the down position. Install the switch plate cover.

Hey. Same as any battery. Connect the Negative terminal straight to the Negative on the light (if needed), Normally the outer rim of the globe. Connect the positive terminal to the switch, then from the other plug on the switch to the positive terminal to the light. Done.

A relay is an electrical device that acts like a light switch. But instead of a person turning the switch off and on, it is done by energizing it from a remote source. So when you hook two wires to a relay, if the relay is normally open, there will be no connection between the two wires until the relay receives a signal (outside source to energize relay) to close. Yes this is done all the time in house wiring. The power source is brought to a light switch's junction box. The source for the light is taken through the switch to turn the light off and on. The same source feeder is then taken to receptacle junction boxes to power devices that have to be plugged in.
