When light hits a surface it experiences reflection and refraction.

Reflection occurs when the incident light bounces back off of the surface. This is the predominant response for highly reflective materials such as silver. Refraction occurs when the incident light travels through the surface. This is the predominant response with transparent materials such as glass. In every material, some light is reflected and some is refracted. However, one or the other is often negligable.
