This occurs when the diploid sporophyte generation of a plant produces haploid spores by meiosis. These haploid spores grow into gametophytes by mitosis and cytokinesis. The haploid gametophytes produce haploid gametes, egg and sperm cells, which undergo fertilization, restoring the diploid condition. The zygote that results from this fertilization grows by mitosis and cytokinesis, and is called a sporophyte, and the cycle continues. This is called alternation of generations.
