The name Auschwitz is the German name of the nearby Polish town Oswiem. On 1 Sept 1939, Germany invaded Poland and in a mere two weeks on 17 Sept Poland was lost to the Germans.
On June 15, 1940, the Nazis opened Auschwitz Concentration Camp which was originally used to keep German prisoners, then Soviet POWS, and later the Jews.
From Oct 1941 thru May 1942, two additional camps, Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II were built to accommodate the gas chambers and crematoriums for the "Final Solution".
Selections for gassing were taking place multiple times daily. The greatest massacre occurring in 56 days from April until the end of June 1944, 436,000 Hungarian Jews, half of the pre-war population, were deported to Auschwitz and to their deaths. The incoming volume was so great that the SS at Auschwitz resorted to burning corpses in open-air pits as well as the crematoria.

On January 17, 1945, Nazi personnel started evacuating the facility; the gas chambers blown up and nearly 60,000 prisoners, most of those remaining, were forced on a death march to another camp as the Soviet Army drew near.
