He was interested in the script maybe? Ledger has said that he disliked 10 Things, mostly because it was a somewhat shallow teen movie with little opportunity for real character development. He also commented on how he hated his line that made a reference to "beer-flavored nipples." Anyway, he said he took the part because after he moved to LA, he had to start somewhere and this was his best offer. This said, I am personally a huge fan of 10 Things and think it is a brilliant teen film. Ledger used the fame and experience gained in 10 Things and tried to steer away from being typecast, landing his next big role opposite Mel Gibson in The Patriot.
