Newton did not invent the telescope. The first practical telescope was made by Hans Lippeshey and Zacharias Janssen in 1608 in the Netherlands. Galileo made significant improvements the following year. All these early refracting telescopes suffered from big problems with chromatic aberation, the separation of colours.

The first reflecting telescope is credited to Niccolò Zucchi in 1616. In 1668, Isaac newton invented a much improved reflecting telescope that still bears his name, the "Newtonian reflector." He added a smaller "diagonal" mirror near the primary mirror's focus to reflect the image at a 90° angle allowing him to look through the side of the telescope and see without blocking the incoming light.

Nice answer upstairs! Newton made his first "good" reflecting telescope in 1688. It still exists -- and works!

Isaac Newton invented a reflecting telescope while teaching at Trinity College, Cambridge, England. {Roughly, sometime during the winter of 1667-1668.}

Note that telescopes had been used for many years prior to this; those used prisms and lenses while Newton's invention dealt with mirrors. Newton did not invent "telescopes" but invented a new design of telescope.

Also note that Scottish mathematician James Gregory proposed the idea of a reflecting telescope three years earlier than Newton, but Newton was the first to build a working model. Newton's design was sufficiently different from Gregory's that Newton received acclaim for the concept.

Newton did not originally invent the telescope. They were invented in the Netherlands in 1608 and improved on by Galileo in 1609. Those were what are known as "refracting" telescopes (a series of lenses that the observer looks through). But Newton did invent the reflecting telescope, which uses a parabolic mirror to gather light, rather than a lens. The worlds largest optical telescopes are all reflectors.

Newton was English. He made many contributions including inverting the reflecting telescope and formulating a quite good theory of gravity and orbital mechanics. He shares the invention of the calculus with Leibniz.

How did Newton solve the problem of using an eyepiece with a reflecting telescope?

== == Newton did not invent the reflecting telescope. The first reflecting telescope is credited to Niccolò Zucchi in 1616. In 1668, Isaac Newton made significant improvements to the design resulting in a much improved reflecting telescope that still bears his name, the "Newtonian reflector." He did it because the refracting (lens) telescopes of the day suffered severe color aberration. (Different focal lengths of different colours of light resulting in a blurred image because all the colours can't be brought into focus at the same time.) Reflecting telescopes do not suffer from color aberation and Newton's improvements made them effective observing instruments. Although the colour aberration of refractors was partially solved by the invention of the achromatic lens in 1733 Newton's design remains in use to this day.
