John 14:16-21. "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans - I will come to you. Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them"

The New Living Translation Bible also adds the following in the notes section, which is their interpretation of the passage: The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God within us and all believers, helping us live as God wants and building Christ's church on earth. By faith we can appropriate the Spirit's power each day.

A:

This occurs in John 20:22, when the risen Jesus breathed on the disciples assembled in the upper room, saying to them (KJV): "Receive ye the Holy Ghost." But Thomas the apostle was not present and, according to John's Gospel, never received the Holy Spirit. Elaine Pagels sees an anti-Thomas theme throughout John's Gospel, resulting from tensions between those Christians who were aligned with the Johannine community and those who considered themselves followers of Thomas.

There is another account of the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit, in Acts chapter 2, which is puzzling in the context of John 20:22. It is explained by the fact that the author of John's Gospel was unaware of Acts of the Apostles, and also that the author of Acts was unaware of John's Gospel.

At Pentecost after His resurrection.

Act 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

Act 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Act 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Act 2:3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

To remind us everything Jesus had taught us before He was crucified. The Holy Spirit is also the guidance that God has sent us.
