In 1945 Korea became indipendent from Japan.

But right after that, USSR and US decided to put Korea under the trustee.

Half north was under the USSR, and half south was under the US.

Actually trustee wasn't realized but it is true north was in the control of USSR and south was in the control of US.

In 1948, all efforts to become one were failed and there was a general election in ONLY south. Some south parties who wanted to be one didn't attend though. Of course North didn't attend either. Anyway after election legitimate South Korean gov was born. Several months later North also declared North Korean gov.

So the answer is... officially in 1948.

(But it was from the beginning after independence)

In the beginning Japan ruled the Korean peninsula since 1910 until 1945 right after its defeat in World War 2. The norther part of the Korean peninsula was controlled by soviet troops while the southern part was controlled by american troops. I believe that the same thing happened to Germany after the Nazi defeat where Germany was split in two. After free elections failed in the entire Korean peninsula relations on both sides deepened afterwards the 38th parallel border became its official border to divide both geographically.
