Yes, in fact, he did! Ulysses S. Grant was a favorite general of Abraham Lincoln at the time, and Grant had no problem taking charge and showing the South who's boss. What was so great about Ulysses was that he was one of the most successful generals in his time. Ulysses S. Grant became the 18th president in 1869 until the year 1877. He died in the year 1885.

Ulysses S. Grant was appointed Major General in July, 1863. In March of 1864, Lincoln promotes Grant to the office of Lieutenant General. In this capacity as head of the Union Army of the Potomac, Grant reports directly to President Lincoln. Grant is now in charge of all military operations. After the Civil War, Grant receives the new title of "General of all the Armies. This is done in July, 1866.
There was no US Civil War battle called the Appomattox Courthouse in the Civil War. The Appomattox Courthouse is the location where General Robert E. Lee the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, who was in charge of all Union forces.
