The Queen Mother's mother was Lady Strathmore. She was born Nina Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck in 1862 in London to Caroline (née Burnaby) Cavendish-Bentinck and her husband, the Rev. Charles Cavendish-Bentinck. The Cavendish-Bentinck family had roots in England, Scotland, as well as in the Netherlands. In 1881, Miss Cavendish-Bentinck married Claude Bowes-Lyon, Lord Glamis. They had ten children, the youngest of whom, Elizabeth, would one day marry into the Royal Family and become the mother of the present Queen. In 1904, on the death of his father, Lord Glamis became the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and Lady Glamis became Countess of Strathmore of Kinghorne. She preferred to live out of the limelight, devoting herself to her home and her family. Lady Strathmore lived to see her son-in-law and daughter Elizabeth crowned king and queen of the United Kingdom. She died in 1938.
