Yes, there were people with that name. They lived in France and were alchemists (yes Perenelle too!) They were very charitable and founded several hospitals, charities, etc. Nicholas was 20 when they married and Perenelle was 30. Together they had one child (possibly.) Perenelle was a widow. Oh! and they found the key to immortality : p. Tomb robbers raided their graves, but found no bodies. And that about sums up who they were!

There are at least three characters based on real life people: Nicolas Flamel is based on real-life French alchemist of the 14th century Nicolas Flamel. Perenelle Flamel is based on real-life French alchemist Nicolas Flamel's wife, Perenelle. Perenelle Flamel was also believed to be a powerful sorceress Gilderoy Lockhart is based on someone J.K. Rowling knows in real life, and she says that the person she has based Lockhart on is so proud of himself that she has barely exaggerated in Lockhart's personality. Rowling, however, hasn't told anybody as of date of this edit who she has based on. There had been rumors that Lockhart is based on her ex-husband Jorge Arantes, though Rowling confirmed this to be wrong on her official website.
