The New York Shakespeare Festival was started by Joseph Papp in 1954. At first they performed in a church basement. They then started touring the city and the outer boroughs, performing on the back of a flatbed truck. In 1957 one of the places the truck stopped was in Central Park. The manager of the park objected that theatregoers were trampling the grass, and in 1959 sued Papp. Papp succeeded, however, and as a result the Delacorte theatre was built for the Festival to perform at. The first performance at this theatre, which is still the home of Shakespeare in the Park, was in 1962.

What company performed at and made famous what out door theater shakespeare?

The New York Shakespeare Festival made the outdoor Delacorte Theatre in Central Park famous by its presentations of free Shakespeare performances there. Indeed Shakespeare is often performed in outdoor venues, so there are probably a number of theatres (most less famous than the Delacorte) and companies (most less famous than the NYSF) who might fit this bill.

Where can you see Shakespeare's plays today?

Loads of places. If you are in England, there are a whole bunch of theatres which are dedicated to performing Shakespeare's plays, including Shakespeare's Globe. If you are in Canada, there is an annual Shakespearean festival in Stratford Ontario which is huge and dedicated Shakespearean companies in every province. The same is true of the United States, where Shakespeare in New York's Central Park is a well-known tradition. And there are numerous Shakespeare festivals dotted around the country. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, or any other English-speaking country is bound to have somebody performing Shakespeare somewhere.A testimony to the ubiquity of Shakespearean performance is a special series of performances at Shakespeare's Globe in London in April 2012. All 37 plays (not including the Two Noble Kinsmen) were performed, each one in a different language by a theatrical company from a different country somewhere in the world. For example, Richard III was performed in Mandarin by the National Theatre of China, and Macbeth in Polish by Teatr Im. Kochanowskiego. A theatrical company from Kabul, Afghanistan, played The Comedy of Errors in Dari Persian.Shakespeare is everywhere.

Who is the director of Shakespeare's in the park Othello?

The New York Shakespeare Festival, now called The Public Theater, calls its performances of Shakespeare in Central Park, "Shakespeare in the Park" although that name is used for outdoor Shakespeare productions around the world. NYSF put on Othello in 1964 with James Earl Jones in the title role. It would appear that Joseph Papp (the push behind the company) was the director, although the references are not clear.
