Spain was first created by the Visigoths as the union of all Iberian territories in the early 400s CE. However, Spain was not united again until the Union of the Kingdoms of Castille and Aragon defeated the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada in 1492 and created Spain.
The current Kingdom of Spain replaced Franco's Spanish State in 1975.
The Moors invaded Spain in 711. At that time it was a conglomeration of different kingdoms. Beginning immediately the invaders were resisted. Slowly but surely these small kingdoms, act individually, or with neighbors, pushed the Moors south. Isabel I, Queen of the Kingdoms of Castile and Leon, married Ferdinand II, King of Aragon on October 19, 1469. They ruled their three separate Kingdoms jointly while continuing the expulsion of the Moors. Eventually they prevailed and the Moors surrendered in Granada in 1492. When their grandson, Carlos II inherited both kingdoms in 1516 modern Spain became a reality. Over the next 440 years it was ruled by various Royal families, the French, some Republics, a dictator and the current government.
Four major kingdoms, Castile, Leon, Aragon, and Navarra were united under one monarch in 1516 when Carlos I inherited them all. He became the first Spanish King as well as Holy Roman Emperor.in april 15,1516
