He rejoined the United States Army on the outbreak of war after a few years' absence, in which he was largely unemployed.

The reasons for his earlier departure from the service are not confirmed. We know that he had been posted to a remote desert garrison, where he badly missed his family, and took to drinking a lot.

He may have resigned of his own will. He may have been officially advised to resign. Or he may have been dishonourably discharged.

Absence of evidence, coupled with his own high status as General-in-Chief and later as President, suggest that he may have had enough influence to have a few documents conveniently lost in the files.
