There's no record of Shakespeare going to jail. This is not to say that he couldn't have, just that we have no reason to think he did. The old legend about him being a poacher has no basis in evidence.
For work. He is not known to have had a steady job in Stratford and he had a wife and three children to feed. Possibly one of his friends in London told him that there were opportunities for a fellow like him there.
There is an old legend that Shakespeare left Stratford because he was running from the law, having poached some deer from Sir William Lucy. However, the fact is that this legend appeared long after Shakespeare's death, and Sir William had no deer for Shakespeare to poach. The lack of any record of proceedings against him (after all, his wife, children, parents and some of his siblings were still in Stratford) also puts the lie to this old tale.
At least one of the things he got fined for (people then got fined all the time just like nowadays) was for building an outdoor sewer on his neighbour's front yard, with the help of some of his other neighbours. Do you think he might have been sending a message?
