To be mainstream, the majority, over 50%, has to use it. In 2000, there were about 109 million subscribers, out of a population of 281 million, or only 39% of the population.

In 2002, there were 141 million subscribers, or just over 50% of the 2000 population. They were considered mainstream by 2003.
