I haven't found a date on which they were withdrawn from circulation, but they obviously have been, probably around 1957 when the first issue of colored notes were issued. All Bank of England notes from which legal tender status has been withdrawn remain payable at face value forever at the Bank of England in London.
Since the average piece of paper money wears out in less than two years, it is quite possible that they were never officially withdrawn. They could have just faded away. ------- The White Fiver was withdrawn in 1957. This is when the Bank of England stops printing and distributing the notes and as they are returned for destruction the issue gradually disappears. The White Fiver ceased being legal tender on 13 march 1961. This is when the note is no longer acceptable as a means of payment. Simon Holmes.
