Mr. Dussle did hide in the Secret Annex with the Franks. However he did not go into hiding at the same time the Franks did. The Franks went first, then the Van Daans, then Mr. Dussle became the 8th member several months later.
The Van Daan family went into hiding in Amsterdam in 1942 during World War II. They joined the Frank family in the Secret Annex to escape persecution by the Nazis.
They did not take suitcases into hiding - a Jew on the street carrying a suitcase was instantly suspect. Miep and Jan Gies carried as much of their clothing with them under their raincoats as possible, and when they left home to go to the annex, they wore many layers of clothing under their coats.

Mr. Dussel's wife did not join him in hiding because she had already been detained separately by the Nazis prior to the hiding period. She was held in a different location, and Mr. Dussel was unable to secure her release or bring her with him into hiding.
