Time zones became necessary with the invention and installation of railroads around the planet. That was 1815 in the USA. Several decades later, after time confusions became pandemic, the railroads in the USA actually defined the first four time zones:

The creation of time segments, such as hours, days, and years, began with the development of early human civilizations thousands of years ago. The concept of dividing time into measurable segments is believed to have originated with the ancient Sumerians around 5,000 years ago.
