The Idaho drinking age was lowered to 19 in 1972. It was raised to 21 in April of 1987, but had a grandfather clause, allowing those who were 19 or 20 at the time of the change to be allowed to purchase alcohol prior to 21 years of age.

The minimum purchase and drinking age is a state law. Each individual U.S. state establishes by law the minimum age at which an individual may purchase alcoholic beverages. Prior to 1985 the legal minimum drinking age varied from state to state. Some states had laws that set the minimum drinking age at 18 or19. The U.S. Government passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act on July 17, 1984. This did not change the drinking age. However, it forced the individual states to establish the minimum drinking age as 21 or lose 10% of their federal highway funding. The act was expressly upheld as constitutional in 1987 by the United States Supreme Court in South Dakota v. Dole. The minimum drinking age is 21 in all 50 U.S. states.
