Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott both explored Antarctica at the same time in 1911. Amundsen was aware of Scott's objective, but Scott was not aware that Amundsen was right behind him. Roald Amundsen got there first on 14th of December, 1911. Amundsen reported that he saw no sign of Scott. Scott reached the South Pole on 17th of January, 1912, acknowledging in his diary that Amundsen had got there a month earlier. The last members of the Scott expedition was found dead by a relief party two years later in 1913.

Robert Falcon Scott did not 'discover' the South Pole. The South Pole is a mark on the map at exactly 90 degrees South latitude, which does not merit discovery.
Captain Scott led two expeditions to be first to 'achieve' the pole, succeeding on the second attempt in 1911, but as the second visitor there. However, he and his companions all perished on their return journey and died from malnutrition and hypothermia in their tent on the Antarctic continent.
The first structure built at the South Pole -- called Old Pole -- was built by the US Navy in 1957. In 1975, it was replaced, having failed due to the increasing weight of ice that formed on its roof.
The Dome -- its replacement -- lasted until 2003, when it, too, was decommissioned, having become buried under ice.
The Elevated Station -- built so that the blowing ice crystals could blow under it and no ice could build up near it, was officially dedicated in 2008.

Until explorers confirmed that the continent of Antarctica was a solid continent, maps generally terminated before showing the --unknown -- geography of the South Pole. Explorers finally set foot at the South Pole in 1911 and 1912.
