It is the Panama Canal. The canal cuts through the Isthmus of Panama, a narrow strip of land connecting North America from South America. The Panama Canal meant that ships could sail between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, without taking the longer, more perilous voyage round Cape Horn (notorious for terribly stormy seas and weather).
