Japan was tired of all of the foreign influences around them. There were Christian missionaries coming in who were changing the older Japanese ways of life. Other countries also were wanting to partake in Japan and they were not willing to give themselves up to anyone. So, they banned trade and isolated themselves in. This was towards the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate period.
