== THE END OF ROUTINE SMALLPOX VACCINATION IN THE UNITED STATES == C. Henry Kempe M.D.1 1 Department of Pediatrics, University of Colorado, Medical Center, 4200 East Ninth Avenue, Denver, Colorado 80220
1971 was the year in which the Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service, the Redbook Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Territorial Health Officers agreed that the time had come to discontinue routine primary smallpox vaccination for American children. As a result of this it may also be expected that school vaccination laws presently in effect in some 28 states will soon be repealed or will not be enforced with vigor. The American pediatrician views these developments with mixed feelings, since there have been extensive and often spirited debates regarding the timing for discontinuation of routine smallpox vaccination.
The World Health Organization was able to successfully eradicate smallpox in 1977, which lead to cessation of virtually all vaccination programs in 1980 (the US stopped requiring smallpox vaccinations in 1972).
he didnt find a dinosaur he figured out that people who had cow pox were immune to small pox. after this people discovered vaccinations.
Edward Jenner invented/discovered vaccinations. he found out that when he gave somebody a small dose of cow pox, (similar in its composition to small pox but non lethal) it made his patients immune to contracting small pox. He was a great man, one to be admired the world over.
It can, if untreated, be fatal. It is very dangerous. small pox was very dangerous as it killed every one who got it. there was a small pox epidemic that killed thousands. a scientist realised that people that had had cow pox (in the same family of disease) were immune to small pox. He carried out a test on a boy with his parents permission, injected him with a small dose of cow pox and then a few weeks later injected him with small pox wih good results. after vaccinations, Britain is now cleared of small pox. that's what Mr Stanton taught me at HMS. ;p That scientist was Edward Jenner.

Anyone and everyone who comes into contact with smallpox is at risk unless they have immunity to the illness. The good news is that smallpox has virtually been eliminated due to widespread use of vaccinations. Vaccinations worked so well that they are no longer needed.
