In the early war, the Army wore Brown or "nutmeg" coats with facings of different colors to differentiate regiments from the different states. In 1777, as a gift to the young nation, the French sent thousands of blue coats with red facings. They were referred to as "lottery coats" since there were not enough coats for every soldier and a lottery was drawn to determine which units received uniforms.
