Most people ride bicycles as kids, bikes are seen as toys, and riding them as playing. Almost as many will keep riding into their teens, either as a means of transportation, to school, on campus etc or as a sport.
Once people are old enough to drive, and have money for a car, plenty of people will pretty much stop riding for utility purposes.
Some might pick up riding for fitness, using their car to bring their bike somewhere nice to ride.
Some will keep up utility riding pretty much throughout their lives. If you live in a big city, it can be easier than owning a car, and public transportation isn't always that nice.
A small number will become hard core fans, going on unsupported bicycling tours where they carry all their own gear. Or travel across the world to ride across continents, do epic mountain rides etc.
