An "Objective" is usually the first few sentences that start a resume. What it's supposed to do is quickly summarize your key traits in an effective way. Quick Tip: Focus on highlighting concrete skills, such as building client relationships, resolving issues, and maintaining detailed documentation.

Hope that helps! If you have any other resume-related questions please don't hesitate to drop me a line.

An "objective statement" is a statement that you include at the top of your resume, which summarizes why you feel you are the ideal candidate for that position. The objective is most useful when the person reading your resume is unsure of the position you're applying for, usually because this was never made clear by the company or if you're just entering the work-force with an entry-level job. The general pitfalls of an objective statement is either making it too specific or too vague. Though the hiring manager wants to be able to tell immediately whether you're a well-suited candidate for the position, they are even more interested in whether you are suited for the company. If your objective doesn't convey why you would be an excellent hire, chances are your resume will go straight to the wastebasket. If your objective is too vague and says absolutely nothing about you, you might as well not bother writing one at all. The well-written objective will tell the employer immediately the kind of job for which you are looking and why they should hire you.

Instead of an Objective statement, You should do a Profile statement. I compose and edit resumes as my business and advise all my clients to do this.

Answer

I was a hiring manager for seven years and there were times that I've had fifty resumes for one opening. The job market at this time is very competitive, and when you have fifty, many with similar backgrounds, what do you think is the deciding factor to call someone?

If you have word processing, I recommend that you leave the objective blank because you're going to tailor it to each openings that you're applying for. I always like to see an objective that not only reflects applicant's goal but their awareness of the goal of the organization or business to which they're applying. You can usually find something to use on their website, what they say the public should know about them or from their employment page, what their goals for their employees are.

For example, I looked up the Barnes and Noble recruitment site and find that they consider themselves "the best in the business". So to translate that to a goal: "I love books and my goal is to learn the retail business and how to excel in customer service while advancing my career by learning from the best in the business." I'm not suggesting that you apply at this store, it's just an illustration of how to pull their own philosophy into your own words.

When I had fifty resumes on my desk for one opening, the ones (often only one out of fifty) that landed on top of the pile and the ones I called first were the ones that told me that the applicant knew who we were and what we did.

I personally feel that objective is really important in a resume. This one statement can actually decide your fate because most of the employers just go through the objective that take their decision.

Determine If A Resume Should Include A Resume Objective?

Including a resume objective is something that some people find necessary when creating their resumes. While this is a good idea for people who are applying for certain jobs, it is not necessary for everyone. A resume objective is a paragraph or a few sentences that is placed near the top portion of the resume. The objective outlines a person's goals in accordance to the job he or she is applying for. This makes it easy for a hiring company to determine if the applicant's job goals are in line for what the company is looking for in an employee. Determining when an objective should be included on a resume and when it should not be included can be accomplished by deciding what type of focus you want the resume to have. Including too much information on a resume can make the resume appear too long and too distracting. A resume that is too long and distracting often will cause an employer to grow quickly bored and the employer will move on to the next resume. It is imperative to have a clean-looking and organized resume that highlights only necessary information in regards to a person's abilities and background that relates to the job he or she is applying for. In order for a resume objective to be effective, it should include a statement that is original, honest and attention-grabbing. Anyone can write that they are seeking long-term employment with the opportunity for advancement. This type of resume objective statement is considered generic and it most likely will not grab the employer's attention. By including something original and honest at the same time, the person will have an opportunity to make a positive impression on a potential employer through the resume objective statement. However, if the individual cannot think of a creative yet simple objective statement, it is best to skip this portion and focus on creating a simple and organized resume that highlights a person's skills and qualifications.
