What would give you short-term immunity?
passive immunity is short term it could either be from a mom giving the antibodies from her blood to the baby in her womb, and when the baby gets out, it still has some of the anitbodies to protect it (for a couple days/ months/ years) or antibodies are injected into a person (this is not a vaccine) to help cure the illness (rabies is an example of a disease where people inject the antibodies)
How are they different between active immunity and passive immunity different?
Passive immunity involves the bodies defenses which do not change for different types of microbes. This would be like Natural Killer B cells which attack a wide variety of microbes. Active immunity involves your body becoming acclimated toward a bacteria or virus, such that future contact will spur on a triggered response. An example of this would be the production of antibodies.

Active immunity is acquired from vaccinations or from infection against a pathogen. The next time you encounter the same pathogen your body has built memory against it and will be able to fight it much more efficiently. Passive immunity is primarily through a mother to a baby or fetus. Through the placenta the mother transfers her immunity (IgG antibodies) to her fetus. Also through breast milk she can although the placenta is much more so. The baby has her/his immunity from the mother but it only lasts a few months because the baby hasn't developed his/her own immunity.

There are several advantages. Mom and baby bond with breastfeeding. This does not mean that it doesn't happen with bottle babies but it is known that the bond is tighter with breastfed babies. The uterus goes back into prepregnancy shape as the breast stimulation causes hormones to cause contractions. This also reduces the amount of postpartum bleeding. But the best thing is that mother's antibodies are found in the very first breast milk. This called passive immunity as the baby will have to make her own later on but it keeps her protected for around 3-4 months. Human breast milk has been made just to produce a healthy baby.
