PlayStation Plus updates their game on the first Tuesday of the month.
It is not the Playstation 3 network that you can get a free month of. The Playstation Network is free. What you can get free is a 30 day membership in Playstation Plus when you purchase a new PS3. It is not that much of a benefit as you can get a full year of Playstation Plus for only $50 or $18 for a 3 month trial. Playstation Plus gives you discounts and free offers from the Playstation Store and is not needed for any online game playing. PSN + also has an automatic update feature for the PS3 and the games so you never have to wait while the system or game is updated before you play
Yes it is free to visit and there is no charge to download the free items from the PlayStation store that include game demos and add ons and assorted videos. Not everything at the store is free of charge and most items do have a charge to purchase. They include a wide range of PlayStation game downloads or add ons for the PlayStation Game discs . There are also movies that you can purchase or rent. There is also PlayStation Plus which does have a Membership charge
Yes they do offer two free games from 5 different game titles and also a month of Playstation Plus and some other bonus items including 100 free Playstation Home items
The free PlayStation plus games say they are only valid as long as you are a PlayStation Plus Member. Games you purchases including the two free downloads for customer appreciation are yours to keep. The games you get to keep also includes the games that were discounted for PlayStation Plus members. What I figured was that PlayStation was just getting started with the customer appreciation and it would be through PlayStation Plus that additional offers were made. It might be wise to purchase an additional 3 or 12 month subscription to PlayStation Plus. I have not yet done so because it is subject to automatic renewal and if you do not have money in your wallet it will charge your credit card. Since the system just came up yesterday for me I have not investigated how to cancel PlayStation Plus once purchased.
You can get PS1 downloads and new ones each month when they are offered from Playstation Plus for a long as you keep the membership or if you buy the reduced priced PS1 games PS + offers you keep them forever.

Updates and patches are downloaded from the PlayStation network. The PS3 system will automatically update when a new version comes out. They are software updates and the PS3 would always find the newest game updates. All Playstation Plus does is update them by turning on your console looking at the games you have files on and searching for updates then instead of after you put the game disc in the system or clicked on the downloaded game to play it. Just as when you purchase a new copy of an older game sometimes you must run updates more than once after you insert the game disc Playstation Plus will do the same thing.
No, to access multiplayer features of most games, you need a Playstation Plus subscription. An exception is this is The Elder Scrolls Online, which will only require a subscription for the game itself. PS Plus is about $5 a month. Smegma.
