Some areas, like Pittsburgh, usually close toward the end of March.
Mid Fed - close usually are spring like conditions. Expect icy conditions, granular and slush 'slow' areas. Occasionally a dumping of snow will hit, with the occasional significant snowfall more often, creating a good couple days of powder; however these snowfalls are 'usually' followed by warming trends that quickly ruin the packed groomers made of pow.
In other areas, more north, you can expect the season to last a bit longer depending on the weather though. Warmth, rain, and lack of cold weather for snowmaking and snowfalls are season killers in the NE.
A couple thousand feet more in elevation, the NE would have been a much better area for snowsports, alas, it's just a bit too low to be consistent for cold temps and snow like you get in the higher elevations out west.
