Easter is celebrated in Germany as a traditional religious holiday. There are also records of Germanic folk customs to include hares and giving away colored eggs going back to before the Birth of Christ. Our modern day Easter celebrations likely borrowed some of these customs and the name Easter from the Celtic-Germanic Ostara Festival which celebrated the spring Goddess Ostara.

Yes. Much more so than in the USA. The celebration of Easter begins with Ash Wednesday, and lasts for 40 days until Easter. It is known as the Fastenzeit - lit. time of fasting. The week from Palm Sunday until Easter is full of Church services. And Easter Monday is even a paid holiday. The commercialization of Easter is not as advanced as in the USA, but it becomes more so every year.

2013: March 30rd - April 1st

2014: April 18th - April 21st
