Fasching is not strictly - or legally - a holiday. Fasching (derived from the word Fastnacht - night of fasting) traditionally began in German speaking countries on January 6 (Epiphany) and lasted until Ash Wednesday. Since the 19th Century the Fasching period (also known as the fifth season) has been extended backwards to start on 11 November at 11 minutes past 11 (11/11, 11:11) to include the carnevals that take place in northern Germany.
It depends primarily on the region, but Oktoberfest is celebrated countrywide. Fasching is also a nationwide event.
It means 'carnival children' in German.
