Lent is traditionally a period of 40 days that begins on Ash Wednesday and finishes on Easter Sunday morning when Eastertide begins. Sundays that fall within the Lenten period do not count as days of Lent and the lenten fast and personal lenten observances are not binding.

The time period of Lent is determined by first determining which Sunday Easter will fall upon and then counting backwards. Easter falls upon the first Sunday after the first full moon of the spring equinox, or, the first Sunday that happens after a full moon after the first day of Spring.
