Why would an 86 Century wagon v6 carburetor have a hard time starting when it is cold and why do you have to step on gas pedal to make the choke close?

There are "steps" on the choke cam that pull the gas pedal up to a high speed idle when the choke is on. If you don't step on the gas pedal once before starting, the carburator/choke assembly cannot function properly.

Does a dodge charger have a choke button?

No. When the car is first started, you are supposed depress the gas pedal, which engages the automatic choke, which is a latching mechanism on the carburetor.

1988 accord lx with auto trans and carb upon starting it wants rev to high after 3-4 minutes running you tap the gas pedal and it drops to an acceptable range?

That sounds like high idle on the automatic choke, once the choke warms a bit it will kick down as it is doing.

How come car won't start without pressing gas pedal?

On cars with a carburetor you must press on the gas pedal to activate the choke, cars with fuel injection do not have a choke so this is not necessary.

Why do you have to pump the gas pedal every time you first start your 85 buick regal after is has been sitting for an hour or two?

Your car has a carburetor. It uses a choke to provide rich fuel mixture during cold-start operation. The choke can only change position from cold/rich to warm/lean or back again when the throttle is not completely closed (when you step on gas pedal at least a little bit.) Also, pressing the gas pedal puts a little extra gas into the intake to ease cold starting. The faster you press the pedal, the more gas it pumps out. If you pump too much, you can flood it which can make starting hard.
