When You Drive A Old Skool Car With A Carb You press down the pedal for cold starts but when car is warmed up you don't always have to press down the pedal
Sometimes you need to press it down in the morning becoause of the condensation.

There are "steps" on the choke cam that pull the gas pedal up to a high speed idle when the choke is on. If you don't step on the gas pedal once before starting, the carburator/choke assembly cannot function properly.

The choke can only change position from cold/rich to warm/lean or back again when the throttle is not completely closed (when you step on gas pedal at least a little bit.) Also, pressing the gas pedal puts a little extra gas into the intake to ease cold starting. The faster you press the pedal, the more gas it pumps out. If you pump too much, you can flood it which can make starting hard.
