My dad s a retired fire fighter and the mechanisms he used were although more olden kind, they were similar to the fire extinguisher. In a life threatening situation you must not panic and aim it in the middle up of the fire, releasing the outer burning energy and then go around it smothering the fire.
HOPE THAT HELPS!!!
When using a fire extinguisher, always make sure you aim for the BASE of the fire as opposed to the flames. Aiming for the base will cool the fuel that is causing the fire to burn, while aiming for the flames will only blow the fire around, potentially causing it to spread even more quickly.
Point the Fire Extinguisher at the base of the flame.
The goal is to smother the fire by depriving it of Air/Oxygen.
When putting out a fire, the extinguisher should be pointed at the base or bottom of the fire, not at the flames above.

The fire extinguisher contents are designed to interact with the fuel/air boundary, so you need to aim at where the fuel is burning, that is, "at the base of the flames."
the base of the fire
At the base of the flames, you want to cover whats on fire with the extinguisher media. The exception would be if it is 'blowing' embers everywhere and making it worse, quickly make the decision to try to extinguish the fire some other way, like a wet towel, sand, garden hose, etc. **Aim at the base of the fire and use a sweeping motion.**

The bottom or base- where the fuel is located.
~ P stands for Pull- Pull the pin. This will also break the tamper seal. ~ A stands for Aim- Aim low, pointing the extinguisher nozzle(or its horn or hose) at the base of the fire. ~ S stands for Squeeze- Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent. ~ S stands for Sweep- Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears to be out. Watch the area. If the fire reignites, repeat steps 2 to 4.
Pull Aim Squeeze Sweep This acronym refers specifically to the steps which need to be taken in order to properly use a fire extinguisher. First you 'Pull' the pin in the extinguisher in order to unlock it; then you 'Aim' the nozzle towards the base of the fire with one hand, while holding the extinguisher in the other (doesn't matter which hand you use as long as you're comfortable holding it); then you 'Squeeze' the trigger to initiate extinguishing; and last you 'Sweep', so that while aiming at the base of the fire you are going steadily side to side as you extinguish!!! Hope this helps!!!
